Partner Frank Tierney was honoured at the County of Carleton Law Associaton Annual (CCLA) General Meeting where he received the Gordon F. Henderson Award. This award honours a lawyer and member of the CCLA who has made a significant contribution to the welfare of the community through performing charitable services.  In addition to the award the CCLA donated $1000 to the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley on Frank’s behalf.

President Obama and the Republican party have agreed to a compromise to preserve the “Bush tax cuts” for the wealthiest in a revision of the U.S. estate tax.

In 2010 there was no U.S. estate tax. As of January 1, 2011, the U.S. estate tax was to have been reinstated in accordance with the 2001 situation: an estate tax rate of 55 percent and an exemption amount of $1 million U.S.  

As a result of negotiations between President Obama and the GOP demands to preserve tax cuts for the wealthiest, an amendment was agrred to for the U.S. estate tax.  For the next two years, the Obama-GOP deal will impose a 35 percent tax on estates larger than $5 million for individuals and $10 million for couples.

For Canadian residents who had concerns over the U.S. estate tax, this amendment is welcome news.

Congratulations to Partner Ian Stauffer on his accomplishment of donating 100 pints of blood to the Canadian Red Cross. Ian has been making regular donations for 25 years. In support of Ian's example and milestone, 15 of his family, friends and colleagues at Tierney Stauffer LLP also made blood donations on Sept 17th.

Tierney Stauffer LLP has made a commitment of $25,000 in support of the campaign to have a Cyberknife at the Ottawa Hospital. The Cyberknife destroys tumours by delivering precise but intense doses of radiation that will kill anything they contact.

"The cutting-edge technology offers a treatment that's at least as effective as radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, but with far fewer side effects", says Dr. John Sinclair, the only neurosurgeon in Canada who's trained to use the CyberKnife.
